1 - 12 Required for Yellow Belt

1. What does Karate mean?      Open or empty hand.

2. What is our style of karate?  Isshinryu Karate

3. What does Isshinryu mean?  One Heart Way.

4. What is our work out area called?  Dojo

5. What do we call our black belt instructors?  Sensei (which means teacher)

6. Isshinryu comes from Okinawa.

7. Master Tatsuo Shimabuku, 10 Dan (10th degree black belt) is the founder of our style.

8. Know Commands for coming to attention and bowing: ki ot skay and rei.

9. Know The kicking parts of the foot: koshi (ball), sokuto (blade edge), kakato (heel)

10. Know the 3 areas of the body: jodan (upper), chudan (middle section), gedan (lower section)

11. Know 5 Directions: Left = Hidari,  Right = Migi, Forward = Mae (Pronounced as Mie)   Backwards = ushiro,  Side = yoko

12. Count to 10 in Japanese. We say it: 1 - itchi, 2 - ni, 3 - san, 4 - shi, 5 - go, 6 - rok, 7 - sheets, 8 - hotsh, 9 - ku, 10 - ju. We spell it: itchi, ni, san, shi, go , roko, sheetshe, hotshe, ku, ju.

1. Who is the current master of Isshinryu Karate? Master Kichiro Shimabuku,

    Tatsuo's eldest son.

2. Count to 20 in Japanese.

3. What are the parts of the karate gi? uwagi = jacket, obi = belt, shitogi = pants

4. Name the techniques that you do in Taikyoku.

5. Name and demonstrate the 3 basic stances (dachi): seisan-dachi, seiuchin-dachi, and nahanchie dachi

6. Name 3 basic techniques (wazas): geri waza (kicking), uke waza (blocking), te waza (hand)

7.Name and demonstrate at least 3 hand techniques: Examples - shuto (knife hand or chop), uraken (back

   fist), nukite (spear thrust), tetsui (hammer fist), seiken (straight punch), shotei (palm heel)

8. Explanation of the Isshinryu patch. The shape of the patch is the shape of the Isshinryu fist. The

entire picture represented by the patch came to Master Tatsuo Shimabuku in a dream. Hence,

the background of the patch is gray in color. The Chinese calligraphy on the upper left side of the

patch says "Isshinryu Karate." The dragon stands for Tatsuo, which in Japanese means "Dragon

Man." The 3 stars stand for good, better, best. "The Best Dragon Man." The female figure is Mizu

Game, the sea goddess. She is standing in waist deep troubled waters of the sea. Her left hand is

held downward toward the waters in the shotei position, meaning "Be calm" or "Quiet down." The

right hand is held upward in tetsui. Showing an ability to use force or fight if necessary.

Tatsuo Shimabuku. studied Shorin-ryu and Goju-ryu. He based Isshinryu on these two styles.
